Nothings to Somethings

Katie McCall is a New Orleans artist and art educator whose work is driven by a love for upcycling and an exploration of play and refinement. She earned a BA in Interior Design from The University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where she learned the fundamental teachings of the Bauhaus School of Design. The curriculum highlighted art and craftsmanship, conceptual design, form and function.

Initial projects were centered around utilizing discarded objects to transform their meaning and purpose. This experience led Katie to use found materials as canvases for painting and collage. Her work changes depending on her current medium, but it often explores themes of pattern, color, nature, playful characters, and local design through a modern lens.

Whether she’s transforming objects like soda cans or creating wearable art weavings, her work has a tactile and accessible quality. Her collections, including Monster Skateboards, embroidered Garden Ghosts, detailed miniature patterns, and colorful fabric sculptures, all focus on detail and authenticity.

As a teacher and an artist, Katie aims her work to provoke and inspire the realm of creative possibility. She cultivates her eye, and her viewers, to find beauty in the mundane.
